Ishiguro was born in Shiga, 1963. Ishiguro was devoted to painting in high school and university. At Dr.Hanao Mori’s laboratory in Yamanashi University, he came across the excitement of the studies of robots and computer vision. Today as a scientist attracting the world’s spotlight, his study of humanoid has got a lot of attention.After the graduation of the graduation school of Yamanashi university, he started the doctor course of Osaka University in 1988. He learned the methodology of research from Dr. Saburo Tsuji. He has been committing to the principle “Think basic problem” even now. Then, he had gone around Yamanashi University, Osaka University, Kyoto University, University of California, Kyoto University and Wakayama University every few years, and he has been researching distributed sensor systems and interactive robotics. He is currently Professor of Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University (2009-). While going around universities, he has continued the research in ATR (Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute), and now he is Visiting Group Leader (2002-) of the Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories. He also participated the foundation of Vstone Co.,Ltd. , an academic-industrial venture company aiming for technical transfer. His principle is that robotics is just the philosophy. Author of “Robot to ha nanika?” (What is Robot?) and “Android Science.

Robots are mirrors of human heart :Hiroshi Ishiguro: TEDxSeeds 2009, Filmed Dec 2009; Posted Jan 2010; translated by TEDxSeeds; "Robots reflect human; they are mirrors of our heart." No research can reach to the true understanding without knowing about ourselves. Innovation and development of any products are driven by our own experiences. By studying and observing how people use products, we could learn unique characteristics of human being. Dr. Ishiguro says, "I desire to create ‘a human’". This lead him to force to explore deeply an entire mechanism of ourselves, a human being. Which means his research life is filled with the deep dilemma that trying to produce androids that interact with human without knowing the original yet.

He has tested the remote-controlled android of himself to see how it works. Then he knows that he shares some senses with his copy. If the remote-controlled copy is touched, he feels as if his own skin is stimulated directly even though he is separated from the place where the actual interaction is happening.

Different from a videophone, his remote controlled Androids make it possible to send own existences. By doing so, he said that we could share feelings with remote places. At this point of realization, one certain question comes up. “What is our physical body? What are our minds, hearts, and feelings?” The process of creating an android may give us a clue to answer to these questions. Robots reflect our mind and heart.
